Nissan Sunny Overview
Nissan marked its entry into the Indian mid-size sedan segment with the launch of the Sunny. The car arrived in our country in its tenth-generation and apart from rivalling the likes of the Hyundai Verna and Honda City, it is a larger alternative to compact sedans like the Maruti Suzuki Dzire and Tata Zest. Here’s a look at what the Nissan Sunny offers and who should consider buying one.It is still one of the most spacious cars for the price but Nissan needs to give it a major upgrade now as the competition has raised the goalpost in the last few years.
Nissan Sunny Exterior & Look
The Nissan Sunny is quite distinguished from its predecessor in terms of exterior appearance, owing to the brand new Teana inspired ‘Boomerang’ follow-me-home headlamps that are placed well inside the restyled front bumper. The slightly V-shaped front grille too gains more dominance this time around and hold the company logo at the centre. Beneath the headlamps, the Sunny flaunts an all new pair of fog lamps with loads of chrome surrounding. In all, the front fascia is, undeniably, more premium and up-market than before. Going to the sideways, there are the sleek as well as aerodynamic side mirrors with integrated turn indicators. The flared wheel arches have been blessed with 15″ 12-spoke alloy wheels; a distinctive Y-spoke design.
Coming to the rear end of the vehicle, the first thing that would catch your attention is the newly designed and enhanced rear bumper. The company has integrated the all new tail lamp cluster considerably well which further compliments the sportiness of the rear portion. There are also chrome touches at the rear just above the number plate which transform the sedan into a much premium territory. Furthermore, there is a black ‘splitter’ which has been used to break up the large 490-litre of boot. Also, there is a short antenna which has moved back from the front just to compliment the overall appearance of the sedan and raise the ambiance. Nissan Sunny is being offered with as many as six vibrant colors – Nightshade, Pearl White, Deep Gray, Onyx Black, Bronze Grey, and Blade Silver.
Nissan Sunny Interior & Comfort
If there is something that speaks ‘volumes’ about the Sunny, it has to be its interiors. The amount of space it offers is simply impressive. The equipment list on the new version has been bumped up and one can see similar changes as seen on the new Micra with the piano finished console.First thing that is strikingly different is the steering wheel. The steering wheel which has been carried from the flagship luxury sedan Teana feels feature rich. It might look like a small addition but then if feels nice and premium. The instrumental cluster remains same as it displays the essentials of real time driving condition.
The central console has been revised. The AC vents have become smarter than earlier with new design. Smooth piano finished console has substituted the otherwise drab looking design and it looks refined now. It also gets a new shade on the dashboard plastic and a USB plug in option situated in the intermittent recess above the glove box. We only wish that Nissan had offered beige coloured trims which would have contrasted the ebony central console in a very stylish manner.
Apart from the revised console, there are no drastic changes in the Sunny. The leather clad seats appear decent. Very few cars in the segment feel as comfortable as the Sunny and the room offered inside the cabin is simply mind blowing. Even though it is perceived as an entry level sedan but then the space does not only make it feel roomier than its rival models but also feels better than upper segment cars which is truly amazing.
Nissan Sunny Engine & Gearbox
The Japanese automaker Nissan has presented the entry-level saloon Sunny in both petrol and diesel guises. The company has refrained from making any modifications in the Sunny; hence, retaining the engine specifications of the same phased out model. The petrol variants carry a 1.5-litre motor with them which has Electronic Fuel Injection Control as fuel system. The 1498 cc, 4-cylinder, 16-valve engine is being christened as ‘HR 15’. It is capable of churning out a top power of 98 bhp at 6000 rpm with the manual variants while the automatic variant gets an exceeded power of 2 bhp which makes it 100 bhp at 5600 rpm. Though, torque remains common in form of 134Nm at 4000 rpm for both the manual as well as automatic variants. The engine gets coupled with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a XTronic CVT transmission.
On the other hand, the diesel avatars of Sunny are being offered with 1.5-litre K9K dCi engine which has been re-tuned to yeild a better fuel economy. The 1461 cc motor has Common Rail fuel system and it generates a maximum power output of 84 bhp at 3750 rpm along with a peak torque performance of 200 Nm at 2000 rpm. Sadly, there is not an automatic transmission on offer in the diesel fuel trim and the company has opted for its conventional 5-speed manual transmission in an awe to maximize mileage and performance.
Nissan Sunny offers a satisfactory mileage in both petrol and diesel guises as compared with the other sedans in the segment. The petrol variants with the manual gearbox deliver a fuel economy of 16.95 kmpl, while the automatic variants returns a promising mileage of 17.97 kmpl. These are quite acceptable, reckoning the impeccable performance of the sedan. On the other hand, the diesel variants come up with a fuel efficiency 22.71 kmpl; still quite low as compared to segment leader City but acceptable. It has exceeded by 1 kmpl than the previous version of Sunny due to the re-tuning of the engine. To know more information on Nissan Sunny check Ogequipment
Nissan Sunny Driving Dynamics
The Nissan Sunny flaunts an all new 3-spoke leather strapped tilt electric power steering wheel. It is quite light in maneuvering the sedan across the narrow streets and the sedan too responds almost instantly and precisely to the driver’s directions. The tilt steering wheel further facilitates the driver to adjust the steering position according to his/her comfort and convenience. Although, despite all this, the handling is just okayish. There is also a first-grade suspension system with Mcpherson Strut as front suspension while the rear one is Torsion Bar in the Sunny sedan. The manual transmission and the automatic transmission of petrol variants of Sunny touch the 100 kmph barrier from standstill in a mere 12.7 seconds and 12.1 seconds, respectively with a common top speed of 175 kmph. The diesel variant crosses the same barrier in a time frame of around 14-15 seconds with a top speed around 160 – 180 kmph.
Nissan Sunny Safety & Security
Nissan always has taken care of this aspect cautiously and subsequently it has returned rich dividends to the company. In Sunny sedan, it has incorporated disc as front brakes while the rear braking system is drum. This primary braking system is complimented extremely well by the trio of Antilock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA) in each and every variant of this sedan. Also, driver airbag is a standard safety feature across all the variants. The top-end trim XV D features front fog lamps which are quite helpful during inclement weather. It also has the front passenger airbag while the paid optional trim XV D (safety) comes with additional side airbags for the front seat occupants.
There are also several alert systems included in the sedan such as low fuel level warning, door ajar warning, speed sensing auto door lock, headlight on warning lamp etc. to aware the driver of the tricky circumstances ahead. The company has also installed a heap of security features to encounter the thieves and lock-pickers. Nissan Sunny comes with Immobilizer, Central Door Lock, Key Remove Warning Lamp etc. as standard security features across all the variants. Additionally, the mid-level and top-end variants feature Anti-theft Device with Alarm and Seat Belt Warning Lamps as extra security features to keep you car protected from goons as well as bullies.

Nissan Sunny Final Word
The new changes make the Sunny feel premium. It is expected to be priced very close to the existing versions as the number of changes is not much. All the features collectively make it feel good. Also, the spacious cabin with a super generous legroom makes it a deal for the chauffer driven.
Nissan products have not suffered because of poor workmanship but the sad after sales experience made the company loose many prospective clients to competition. The company has resorted to strict measures to change this scenario. After taking reigns from Hoover Auto, the distribution network has been completely revamped. The company has plans of increasing its hold in the country with an aggressive dealership expansion plan. This will help Nissan India regain lost confidence.
