The Mercedes-Benz GLE is a luxury SUV offered by the German carmaker in India which is based on the previous generation E-Class. It is powered by one petrol engine and two diesel engines. The petrol engine is a 2,996 cc unit that generates 333 hp of power at 5,250 rpm and 480 Nm of torque from 1,600.x` It is mated to a 7 speed automatic transmission. The smaller diesel engine is a 2,143 cc unit that produces 204 hp of power at 3,800 rpm and 500 Nm of torque.
This motor is mated to the 9G-Tronic 9 speed automatic gearbox. The larger diesel engine generates 258 hp of power at 3,400 rpm and 620 Nm of torque at 1,600 rpm. Mercedes Benz GLE Class Exteriors
Apart from the change in badging, this mid-life facelifted model gets a few cosmetic changes even if the size of the SUV remains the same as the outgoing M-Class. The fascia makes it clear in the first glance that the changes are in line with Mercedes-Benz’s latest design language. The grille and the pinned-back headlights remind you of the other new siblings with a similar front. However, the tall bonnet with sharp lines have retained the aggressive stance of the SUV. The headlamps with projectors also house the daylight running lamps (DRLs) forming the eyebrows like in other models.
The silhouette looks similar to the one of the previous car, not really something that needed any improvement. However, what has pleased me are the changes at the back which have given the GLE a better look. The wraparound tail lamps are redesigned with LEDs and look sleeker than the ones on the previous model. Adding further to the appeal is the re-profiled bumper set with dual exhaust tips. Mercedes Benz GLE Class Interiors
Just like the exterior the interior too has received significant amount of changes. Step inside and the first thing that will catch you attention is the huge media display screen that has been partially integrated into the dashboard while the air con vents are surrounded by the silver shadow surround. While take a look around the cabin and you will also notice that the central console also houses the controller for the Mercedes COMMAND system which by the way also gets a touchpad.
Mercedes has also offered new colors for the interior while there are plenty of choices of colors to choose from for the interior. Mercedes is offering GLE 250d and 350d variants in India, yes, the ‘CDI’ moniker too has been replaced with ‘d’ for the diesel models. The 250d gets a 2.1-litre 4-cylinder diesel engine producing 204 BHP and 500 Nm. We drove the GLE 350d which gets a 3.0-litre V6 diesel mill that churns out 258 BHP and 620 Nm. The GLE moves with a smooth and linear progress initially and once past the mid-range, it pulls like whoosh! Refinement is at its best, no diesel clatter at lower revs and near the redline the 6-pot oil burner sounds a bit sporty. There is a wee bit of turbo lag but the meaty mid-range is what makes the GLE feel like it has wings, strong yet effortless acceleration.
Finally the 7G-TRONIC transmission has been replaced by a 9-speed 9G-TRONIC gearbox, which is lighter, more fuel efficient and highly responsive than the former. The gears are stacked closely and hence gear changes are brisk, no more do you feel the power dip while changing the cogs. The steering mounted paddle shifts are now more fun to use since you get the right gear at the right time. The 9-speed transmission is quite active for multiple downshifts and also offers relaxed cruising ability. The engine spins at just 1150 RPM at 100 km/hr in ninth gear.
The intelligent DYNAMIC SELECT system gives you a choice of five modes – Comfort, Sport, Slippery, Individual and Off-Road. This system changes parameters of the engine, transmission, steering and suspension. In Comfort, the throttle response is subdued while the gears change early for a smooth drive and in Sport, it’s the opposite to extract the max out of the engine and transmission which shifts near the 4500 RPM redline. Mercedes Benz GLE Class Riding
This a good old school design SUV with hosts of modern features. All three models are 4matic and this indeed works very well. There is a special feature about the 4matic. After a speed of 120 km/h the individual power to all 4 wheels gets cut off ait is same power to each wheel. This helps providing more traction and less chance of failure. Because of the weight and soft suspension there is a slight understeer at high speed corners.
On the bright side the GLE has an amazingly plush ride. The seats are soft and the bumps do not filter into the cabin especially to the people. There is enough boot place to carry half a house if shifting and the 2nd row seats go completely flat and can be use as a double bed. Thank god for the new 9G-tronic. It eliminates all the flaws of the 7G-Tronic and is way less jerky. Also the gear shift time has reduced drastically. And incase you do want a little fun you have paddle shifts to get into formula one mode.
