Volkswagen Ameo Overview

Built on the same platform as the premium hatchback counterpart, the sub-four-metre sedan segment is unique to the Indian market. Thanks to the regulations that effectively incentivise cars in this (small car) segment, now popularly called CS or compact sedans, there are number of these cars fighting for a share of the pie. Volkswagen was a late entrant into this CS segment, what with the development of the Ameo, built on the Polo, taking a ridiculously long four years to go into production. When the Ameo finally made it to showrooms it was already short on ammunition because it was launched with only one powertrain option – a petrol engine and a manual transmission. The CS segment is dominated by diesel-engined competitors, and buyer preference is still predominantly diesel.

So, when VW officially announced the Ameo TDI diesel earlier this month, it was good news for the brand and the buyers. And thankfully, this one gets VW’s famous 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox too, in addition to the 5-speed manual option. Last week we got behind the wheel of the Ameo TDI in Mumbai to assess this new offering from Volkswagen.

Volkswagen Ameo Design

The Volkswagen Ameo sports a front grille like the Volkswagen Vento, it adorns 3 chrome slats and the air intake at the lower bumper sports sharp slats. The headlamp clusters are also sharp shaped, while the fog lamps at both sides of the lower bumper are also similar. The front bumper protruding from under the camouflaging cover suggests that it would come beefy looking. We hope the Ameo would get some chrome garnishing at the front profile as a styling touch.

The side profile was relatively clearly visible than the front and rear profile. There are not much of character lines visible, while the Vento sports several sharp and deep character lines running through the body. There is a subtle crease running parallel with the greenhouse area, while at the lower part another subtle crease is visible. The pillars are body coloured, while the roof line blends perfectly at the rear. A rooftop antenna is also visible.

Being a sub compact sedan this car clearly sports a small tail section. Volkswagen has just released an image of the tail lamp with the badge visible. The tail lamp looks sharp and the cuts and creases can also be seen surrounding it, which look pretty sharp.

Volkswagen claims the design language of Ameo portrays general bursts of emotion, while the dynamic design was conceptualized to impress everyone. They expect this car will be a game changer in the highly competitive Indian market. The car looks like VW Polo from front and VW Vento from rear, although the side profile tells the tale. The boot seems to come with a short length. The car is built on PQ24 platform of the Polo and Vento.

Coming to interiors, the Ameo is ditto to Polo hatchback and it’s not a bad approach at all. From clocks to flat-bottomed steering and the touchscreen infotainment, all are familiar. The sense-good feel is evident as the car appears to be expensive from the inside. The quality of material is way above every other car in the segment and the touch & feel and fit-finish levels are also nice, thanks to the pearl black and desert beige colour scheme used on the fabric. What’s really interesting is the arm rest with under storage space created for the driver. However, Ameo doesn’t come with rear arm rest, but the carmaker has compensated that feel-good factor with the rear ac vents.

Talking about the seating and space, for a car measuring less than 4-meter, creating maximum interior space is a challenge for every carmaker. Volkswagen too has done its bit to ensure maximum comfort inside. The front seats offer good support while the back of the front seats has been scooped out in order to give more knee room. And while you won’t get leather upholstery like in other rivals, the fabric seems to have been lifted from the segment above cars. The legroom and the knee room at the rear is decent for a car of this stature.

In terms of equipment, Ameo gets automatic climate control, cooled glovebox, auto-dimming IRVM, rain sensing wipers, cruise control and power one-touch up/down facility on all the four windows. The center console houses a touchscreen infotainment system that not only care of your entertainment aspect with USB, Aux-In, SD-card and Bluetooth connectivity, but also relays feed from the rear parking camera. However, the inclusion of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay would have been the icing on the cake. Other comfort aspects include height adjustable driver seat, electrically adjustable ORVM and multi-functional display that provides info such as distance traveled, traveling time, average speed, digital speed display and fuel economy.

Volkswagen Ameo Gearbox

The new Ameo TDI is offered with the same 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine as is the Polo and Vento. Only difference is in the larger turbocharger which has enabled the engine to deliver a tuned-up 81kW or about 110PS of peak power and a peak torque of 250Nm – that is quite impressive for a small car that weighs just over 1,150kgs. With the idling engine rpm level being about 800rpm and the redline starting at about 5,200rpm, the delivery of power and torque is perfectly tuned within the mid-range for power, and low-rpm range for torque. Peak torque kicks in as early as 1,500rpm and turbo-lag is quite minimal. The result is an eager performer for a car in the CS segment. The Ameo’s gear ratios have been spaced just right and from when you slip into first gear, there is enough room to work the gearbox through either a passive city driving cycle or an aggressive mix of cruising and over-taking on the highway. While idling and when you are outside the Ameo, this four-cylinder still has the trademark diesel clatter, but step into the cabin and the good insulation package manages to cut out a lot of the noise. You can still hear the engine at cold start and at high revs. The manual gearbox is a clean shifting 5-speeder and can easily be your choice especially with so much low-end torque available to exploit. The 7-speed, dual clutch DSG automatic is another USP altogether in the Ameo. With so many buyers now preferring automatics, it is a good call to go with the DSG. But then this is not just another auto transmission, this is VW’s popular dual clutch gearbox. Shifts are quick and the gearbox is equally adept at offering shifts for economical, slow-paced driving as it is for aggressive, dynamic driving. As both the engines are inherited from Polo hatch, they are excellent on fuel efficiency. The 3-cylinder petrol engine is able to make ARAI certified mileage of 19.44kmpl. On the contrary, the diesel one reads 21.73kmpl in automatic and 22kmpl in the manual version which is fantastic from a VW car.

The Ameo TDI’s ride quality is very similar to the petrol version and the Polo’s. The car remains planted and settled even at high speeds. This is the compact sedan you’ll feel confident in while doing over 160kmph. Personally, I love MPVs. Imagine packing the parents, the wife, the kids and even the dog into one car and driving into the sunset. Alternatively, I could call a couple of cabs, split the family, and lose the family bonding forever. Okay, the last bit was a bit extreme, but who doesn’t want their family to travel together? There is another option, of course – the sub Rs 15 lakh, seven seater SUV. But, then these, even though rugged and high on road presence, are all ladder-frame based. The need of the hour then is a spacious, genuine seven seater, car-like MPV that’s also high on style… you know just to keep the wife happy. So far, we have had the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and the Honda Mobilio. And though these MPV tick a few boxes, they don’t tick them all. The new Renault Lodgy though, promises to do just that.

Renault Lodgy Exteriors

The MUVs are boxy out of necessity and maximising the cabin space is more important than styling. The good looks then come essentially from cosmetic upgrades and design elements that hide the bulk. The Lodgy at primary level is also a box, though Renault has made more than a few changes to try and make it more appealing.

Renault designs are generally a bit quirky and the Lodgy isn’t any different. The front gets a hexagonal grille with twin slat chrome inserts and the big Renault Logo in the middle. The bonnet has an unconventional design with subtle creases running parallel to the A pillar. The headlamp cluster is elongated like in most of the modern day cars with a conventional halogen set up occupying the bottom half while the parking light and side indicators take the top outside-half. The front bumper looks nice with the diffuser and chrome inserts for the round fog lamp units. The slightly flared wheel arches add bulk to the front and give the Lodgy a squat stance like that of the Duster.

At close to 4.5 metres, the Lodgy is a big car and the side profile gives a better idea of its proportions. It is based on the Duster platform with an extension at the back to accommodate the third row. The roof is sloping towards the end and that reduces the size of the windows for each roof. The MUV looks slightly weird from this angle with the bulk gradually reducing towards the back and also riding on the tiny looking 15-inch tyres. The smart addition here is the chrome side mouldings in the lower half that look nice. The tail section makes the car look boxy with minimal design elements, although the contemporary tail lamp cluster does some face saving. The Lodgy badge is placed in trademark Renault style, embossed on a chrom plate, right in the centre above the number plate.

Renault Lodgy Interiors

The interior architecture of the Renault Lodgy looks familiar to the Duster. On the plus side, the trims look pleasant with a decent build quality. The plastics aren’t much about upmarket finish but at the same time it won’t leave you complaining.

The three pod instrumental cluster which was launched in the new gen Duster makes its way into the Lodgy with an analogue speedo and tachometer. It gets an information display screen on right which displays tripmeter, odometer and fuel left in digital format. The three spoke steering wheel offers good grip, has buttons to control the cruise control and speed limiter. As for operating the central infotainment and media options, there is a media rack nicely tucked on the column behind the steering wheel. Quirky it might appear but then it is useful.

Being the top end RxZ version, it had the best of all features like media-navigation screen which also doubles up as a screen for manoeuvring in reverse and parking. Renault’s attempt in making sure the Lodgy feels more appealing than competition has paid off well, which can be seen in the right colour combination of Gris Fume and Beige used in the interiors. The nicely stitched leather seats feel comfortable. All three row seats get leather as standard for the top spec variant. The under thigh support too is decent for first and second rows while the third bench type seat just fulfils the basic need.

Unlike the sliding doors which aren’t the best in the business to welcome occupants, the large standard styled doors make great sense. Even the large windows aid the mission of making the cabin feel more airy and roomy. Our test car had captain style second row seats but Renault will offer standard bench styled seats for the second row as well with a central armrest and cup holders. All seats in first two rows get armrests. The negative here is the immovable fixture of second row seats, which doesn’t let the seats slide horizontally. This could have made more knee room for the second row occupants. Renault also claims that the third row seat offers more room than the Innova, 43% to be precise.

Renault Lodgy Performance

Unlike most of its rivals, the Lodgy is only available with a diesel heart — the popular 1.5-litre K9K. With a single camshaft for its eight valves, this four-cylinder motor may not be cutting-edge in terms of technology, but it is a very flexible unit. Like on the Duster, this motor is available on the Lodgy in two states of tune – 83bhp and 108.6bhp – with different turbochargers and injection systems responsible for the varied power output. Also, the ECUs used by the motor on the two variants are different. The more powerful version tested here, THP in Renault-terms, gets a variable-geometry turbo (as opposed to the fixed-geometry turbo on the 83bhp version) and also comes with an intercooler.

The 1.5-litre diesel motor pulls really well once revs rise beyond 2000rpm and carries on till 4000rpm, after which the power tails off. When the roads open up, the powerful mid-range means, as long as you are not in sixth gear, it’s easy to overtake cars at typical highway speeds. However, while the final cog doesn’t help you gather pace quickly, it’s a great cruising tool that keeps the engine spinning at just about 2,000rpm at 100kph – great for stretching your fuel tank.

The Lodgy sprints to 100kph from standstill in 11.5 seconds, making it, by far, the fastest MPV on sale here. That said, the motor’s initial turbo lag and the slightly heavy and snappy clutch make driving this Renault in stop-go traffic a little cumbersome. However, off-boost power isn’t too bad, and unless you really want to make quick progress, it won’t warrant many downshifts.

This engine is mated to Renault’s six-speed TL4 manual gearbox, and while it doesn’t require much effort, the gearshifts could have been more precise. To aid drivability, Renault has kept first, second and third gears on the shorter side, which allows you to keep the engine on song in typical city driving circumstances. And the fourth, fifth and sixth gears are tall, to aid relaxed highway cruising.

Renault Lodgy Driving

The Lodgy has a monocoque body with McPherson struts at the front and torsion beam at the rear equipped with anti roll bars. This setup is usually ideal for brisk handling and high speed stability, which is quite evident in the Lodgy. It handles the corners pretty well despite being an MPV and the body roll is well controlled but due to the tall stance, it tends to swing the passengers to a certain extent while cornering hard. The steering feedback is quite disappointing, being vague at the centre. Unlike the Duster, the steering of the Lodgy doesn’t communicate well with the driver having inconsistent feel. High speed stability is impressive and you can do triple digit speeds easily but the steering being on the lighter side makes you a bit nervous.

The ride quality is fantastic in the Lodgy and it eats bumps, potholes, rough tarmac quite well for avoiding vertical movement. The sorted damping also keeps those ugly clunking sound away when you hit big potholes. However, the rear tends to bob a little when there are no passengers sitting at the back. The 185/65/R15 tyres do a great job of absorbing rough roads and keeping the MPV glued to the tarmac at corners. The long wheelbase makes its presence felt while taking a U-turn having a relatively wide turning radius. Braking performance is strong and confidence inspiring with a good pedal bite. The stopping distance from 80-0 km/hr is 35.26 metres.

The Renault Lodgy has got only three star safety rating from Euro NCAP and that too for the international model having 6 airbags as standard. Renault will be offering the Lodgy in India with only dual front airbags, which is a big letdown. It will also get ABS, EBD with brake assist. Apart from cruise control, the MPV will come with a speed limiter as well. Renault currently has a network presence of more than 157 facilities across India. To sum up, the Lodgy has many a positives going for it. It looks good for an MPV, has enough space that is desired by MPV buyers, is feature laden, offers a great ride, comfort and has a strong build. It is a sensible upgrade for people who want more space than their premium hatchbacks / mid-size sedans, without compromising on performance, comfort and features. Skoda Kodiaq Overview

Skoda had started its innings in India with a bang. The Octavia, back then, was second only to Mercedes with its tank-like build and typical European demeanour. Without the presence of any real competition, Skoda’s brand value leap frogged many seasoned players in the Indian car market. With its perceived luxury, a big fat SUV was always on the cards. So here we are driving the all-new Skoda Kodiaq, the first big-fat SUV from the Czech carmaker in over 100 years to find out if it can be the giant slayer like its sedan sibling, the Skoda Superb. Skoda Kodiaq Exterior & Look

Viewed from the front the Kodiaq is quite distinctive. There is a sense of width as the butterfly grille fans out wide, with chunky bars popping out to create a strong three-dimensional design. The sharp cut and slim headlamps increase the sense of width, but also add a sense of delicateness to the design. As expected from Skoda, the lines are crisp and elegant and it is evident when you view the Kodiaq from the side. Lightly squared-off wheel arches give a hint of robustness.

From the rear the Kodiaq looks neat and crisp, just that. The sharply cut tail lamps also jut out, giving them a three-dimensional feel. The C-motif is also executed in an edgy and taut feel. The deeply clefted tailgate breaks up the volume nicely too. It’s been named after an Alaskan bear, but the Kodiaq is no grizzly SUV. Like the Audi Q7, the Kodiaq too has a whiff of an overgrown estate rather than a brawny SUV. The surprise, though, is that the Kodiaq really isn’t small! While it looks quite tidy, its dimensions put it in the league of the Hyundai Santa Fe. At 4,700mm, it is as long as the Santa Fe, and with 1,880mm of width it is as wide as well. The Skoda boasts of longer wheelbase (by 90mm!) which gives it a planted stance too. However, the Skoda isn’t as tall as the Santa Fe and that’s what keeps it from getting that towering SUV-like stance.

Skoda Kodiaq Cabin & Space

The Kodiaq’s insides look similar to the Octavia and Superb’s. You get a two-tone finish with the top half of the dash finished in black while the lower half and seats are beige-hued. This is a well-designed cabin and feels premium. The top of the dash uses soft-touch plastics from end to end, while the panel below it wears a wood finish. Air-conditioning vents are vertical ones, which Skoda tells us have been designed to channel air better while also being quieter.The front seats are wide, bolstered well and well-cushioned, and I particularly like how spacious the cockpit is. There’s lots of space for the driver and the electrically adjustable seat and rake/reach adjustable steering make finding a good driving position easy. You don’t sit too tall and the feel is more car-like than SUV. Second row seats are very spacious and comfortable and seating three abreast shouldn’t be an issue.

The second row seatback is split 40:20:40, and while the seat can be moved ahead by 180mm, the seats don’t tumble forward completely which makes getting into the third row a bit of a task.The third row has you sit higher and under thigh support isn’t great but legroom is good and the seats should be good for short distances. Boot volume is a decent 270 litres with all three rows up, but flip the third row down and you get 630 litres of volume. Flip the second row down as well and you get a massive 2005 litres of volume. The Kodiaq gets three-zone air-conditioning and the system worked well in Kovalam’s humid climate. There’s a massive panoramic sunroof to add to the airy feel along with the beige interiors, and on the whole the Kodiaq feels very spacious, particularly as a family or chauffeur-driven SUV.

At present, Skoda will offer only a single 2.0-litre DQ500 diesel engine on the Kodiaq which will be mated to a 7-speed DSG unit, which is quite a surprise considering a majority of car buyers are migrating back to petrol engines. A petrol engine option should have been on the cards. Getting the numbers out of the way, the engine makes 148 bhp at 3,500-4,000 rpm and pumps out peak torque of 340 Nm at 1,750-3,000 rpm. The claimed fuel efficiency of the Kodiaq is a decent 16.25 kmpl. This is all the more evident when you need to overtake a lumbering truck or a slower car ahead of you. Skoda also offers five driving modes on the Kodiaq, which are the Eco, Normal, Sport, Snow and Individual. The car is running on 4×4 all the time with the torque vectoring system delivering 96 per cent of the torque to the front wheels. Upon requirement, it could send up to 50 per cent of the torque to the rear wheels as well. The Kodiaq will always be more comfortable on the tarmac, but having said that it could tackle very mild off-road terrains too.

As for the dynamics, it feels like a large, higher-riding Superb to drive, and that’s just what you’d expect from a monocoque SUV. It’s also a revelation in a segment dominated by bulky, ladder-frame SUVs like the Fortuner and Endeavour, which feel a lot more cumbersome from behind the wheel. The steering isn’t bristling with feedback and it is a little numb around centre, but at least it’s neutral and predictable.

On Mallorca’s narrow village roads, it certainly did a great job of shrinking itself around me, when in reality, it just about barely fit the lane width. You do get a bit of body roll, but that’s nowhere as much as you’d get in a ladder-frame SUV. Our test cars all had DCC – Dynamic Chassis Control – which alters suspension firmness and steering weight in one of a few different modes, but we found the differences to be very slight. Overall, the Kodiaq, on its 18-inch wheels and 55-profile tyres, likely the same ones we’ll get in India, rides nice and flat, although it can feel a little lumpy over broken bits of road.

The Modern Line of the BMW 520d gets all beige interiors which do give the cabin an airy feel but might not appeal to some. The dashboard is very similar to the old model but BMW has made small changes to boost the luxury appeal of the 5-Series. There are brushed silver inserts on the dashboard, including on the third spoke of the 3-spoke steering wheel. Light coloured wood inserts are placed on the dashboard, centre console and doors. The car uses a 6.5-inch screen for the infotainment system but the iDrive controller isn’t a touch-pad like on the 530d. At the rear, seating comfort continues to be excellent with ample cushioning all around. There is space for two at the rear as the transmission hump prevents a third passenger from squeezing into the rear bench. The big update to the 5-Series is the new instrument cluster, which isn’t a conventional unit. Instead, it uses an LCD screen and can change the display based on the driving mode. There are three modes on offer – Eco Pro, Comfort and Sport, the complete console changing colours and layout in each of these modes. BMW hasn’t skipped on equipment on this base 5-Series variant, it still comes with 8 airbags, sunroof, leather seats, steering mounted paddles, dual-zone climate control, electric steering and seat adjust (the latter with memory function).

All the variants are interestingly of a 2.0 litre capacity with only the BMW 5 Series 530d M Sport and BMW 5 Series GT 530d LE offered as a 3.0 litre engines. The engine performance of the BMW 5 Series 525d Luxury+ is slightly tweaked to offer higher power compared to the usual engine variant. The three key variants however are BMW 520d, BMW 525d and BMW 530d. The BMW 530d produces a maximum output of 258 bhp and the torque reaches a peak of 540 Nm at 1500 rpm. The BMW 525d however offers 218 bhp out maximum output.

The third variant BMW 520d does not fall short in terms of performance and generates a maximum output of 184 bhp decent 380 Nm or torque at mere 1750 rpm which shows the effective power distribution inside the vehicle. Following Common Rail Direct Injection in combination with a turbocharger, the BMW 520d offers a top speed of a remarkable 231 kmph. Since all the variants are predominantly diesel oriented, they come with impressive mileage. BMW 530d offers an impressive mileage of 14.69 kmpl while the BMW 525d offers a slightly higher 17.09 kmpl. However most impressive of the lot is the BMW 520d which generates 18.48 kmpl mileage. The emission figures of all the vehicles comply the national regulations and are noted to be at 154.75 gms per kilometre and 114.47 gms per kilometre for BMW 525d and BMW 520d respectively.

This being a German luxury sedan, it rides low on the road and that too after BMW has raised the ground clearance for the Indian market. The low ground clearance means that you have to slow down significantly for speed breakers.The ride is a little hard even in the comfort or ECO PRO mode and tends to give you feedback even for the smallest imperfections on the road. This is down to the large 18-inch wheels and massive run-flat tyres which are tuned for fast driving but in turn make your ride much harder.

However, the ride, despite being hard in the 530d, is much softer when compared to the previous generation car. At high speeds the 530d is very stable. The electric power steering from BMW is the best I have ever used and it weighs up quite well at high speeds. However, it still does feel heavy even at lower speeds. The massive brakes are well suited to this car of this size and have ferocious stopping power.

Dual front airbags along with head and side airbags are an effective protection in the event of any collision. The new BMW 5 Series looks elegant and has new features, which its predecessor missed. It drives well and also offers the comfort and luxury you would expect from a chauffeur-driven car. Still if the latter is your primary need, the 5 doesn’t come anywhere close to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. After all, the E-Class is the only long wheelbase model in this segment. Nonetheless, at Rs 53.6 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi), the new 5 Series still has sufficient kit to compete against the Audi A6, the Jaguar XF and the Volvo S90 in our country.

In The Year 2018 Three-Fourths Of H1B Visa Holders Are Indians

Nearly three out of every four H-1B visa holders as of October 5 are Indian citizens, an official US report has said.

According to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), there were as many as 419,637 foreign nationals working in the US on H-1B visas as on October 5.

Of these, 309,986 are Indians, the USCIS said in its report ‘H-1B petitions by gender and country of birth fiscal year 2018’. Check for H1B Visa Process in UT Evaluators

The report reveals a massive gender disparity – only one out of every four H-1B visa holders is female. Of the 419,637 H-1B visa holders, 106,096 (or 25.3 per cent) are females as against 311,997 (or 74.3 per cent males), it said.

Gender disparity is wider among Indians.

Of the 309,986 Indians on H-1B visas in the US this October, only 63,220 or 20.4 per cent are females while nearly 245,517 Indians on H-1B visas or 80 per cent (79.2 per cent to be precise) are males. As many as 1,249 Indians on H-1B visas have been characterised in the category of missing/others.

Indians, who account for 73.9 per cent of the total H-1B visa holders in the US, are followed by a distant Chinese with 47,172 on H-1B visas, accounting for 11.2 per cent of the total foreign nationals on this work visas.

But there is not much gender disparity among the Chinese on H-1B visas. According to the report, 21,342 or 45.2 per cent are females and 25,718 or 54.5 per cent are males.

After India and China, Canada and South Korea are the only two countries which account for a little over one per cent (1.1 per cent to be precise) each on H-1B visas. Check for H1B Visa in Aryavarta

After that all other countries constitute less than one per cent of the H-1B visas as of October 5.

The Philippines is the only country in top 10 H-1B visa holders wherein there are more females (1712 or 52.7 per cent) on H-1B visas than males (1519 or 46.7 per cent) on H-1B visas. As of October 5, as many as 3,250 professionals from the Philippines were on H-1B visas.

The H-1B gender report was released days after the Trump administration came out with its unified fall agenda, in which it said that it plans to make changes in the definition of specialty occupation for the definition of H-1B visas and re-redefining the relationship between employees and employers.

The proposed regulations, it said, is aimed at attracting the best and the brightest from across the world, prevent the abuse of H-1B visas which is consentient with the hire American agenda of the Trump administration.

The USCIS is also proposing to introduce a pre-registration system for foreign students in the US. Technically it is possible that if 85,000 such students succeed in getting H-1B visas, no overseas applicants could apply.

Renault Duster Overview

It was the Renault Duster that had kicked off a storm in the affordable SUV segment in India. Before the Duster arrived, the Mahindra Scorpio and Tata Safari were ruling the roost but Renault clearly knew what the Indian buyer wanted. The Duster became quite a success story and it also established the Renault brand in India.

However, it’s been almost 4 years since this SUV was launched and it started feeling very outdated, what with rivals coming up with far more polished vehicles. Renault has now given the Duster a new lease of life so let’s see what we’ve got here. Check for Car Loan Interest calculator.

Renault Duster Style & Look

For starters, the Duster facelift isn’t much different to begin with from the original Duster. You do get blacked out and upgraded headlights that look quite futuristic with it’s distinct cuts and details and a set of new tail lights with a very unique LED lighting pattern. What you also get is a new grille that is better styled than the older one. And then there are the new wheels. Now although some like this blacked out design, we think Renault could have given us a far sportier and slightly larger set of wheels on this new Duster.

You also get a set of silver skid plates on the front and the rear bumper and a chrome exhaust tip that adds to the look. The overall SUV look of the Duster combined with the wide stance are still very much as they are and all these smaller updates actually help accentuate it. Although a little late to the party, the upgrades on the Duster make it look quite nice and modern and personally I prefer the simplistic lines on this car as compared to the over the top design of some other SUVs in its segment. As a final note on the design, we personally love this new and bold orange shade that the Duster now comes in.

Renault Duster Comfort & Space

The cabin is quintessentially Renault, from the odd-numbered speedometer, the large steering wheel, sub-par plastics to the quirky layout overall. When the Duster was introduced in 2012, poor interior surface feel was one of its main shortcomings. Now, though, Renault has improved the quality of the surfaces, there is still a low-rent feel to the doors and centre console surrounds… more on this later.

Coming to the design and layout, the previous model’s old-school design has made way for a somewhat modern look. The combination of black and brown upholstery and silver highlights across the centre console and the door panels do a good job of hiding the cabin’s age. The centre console’s layout is pretty minimalistic with the central fascia dominated by a touchscreen infotainment system responsible for almost all the functions on board. Rounding out the major changes to the dash are the revised air-conditioning controls which are set painfully low. Mind you, this isn’t the only quirk in here. The driver’s seat height adjuster still requires bit of an effort to operate and having separately placed buttons on the steering wheel and the centre console for the cruise control isn’t the brightest of ideas either. As for space and comfort, the Duster remains unchanged and in no way that’s a bad thing. The front seats are just about the right size and offer enough back and knee support. They also helped us to limit fatigue over a full day of full-on driving. More importantly, the rear-seat space is also plentiful with better thigh support than the competition. What’s noticeably changed, though, is the amount of standard equipment; Renault is finally offering climate control for top-spec variants while other highlighting features include rear-view camera with guidelines and an updated touchscreen infotainment system. All in all, the Duster’s cabin still doesn’t feel as premium as the competition, but there’s no denying that it’s more appealing than before. If anything, it’s certainly more luxurious than its badge-engineered sibling, the Nissan Terrano.

Renault Duster Engine & Performance

The Renault Duster comes with the same 1.5-litre dCi diesel powerplant in two states of tune – 84bhp and 109bhp. There’s also a 1.6-litre petrol engine mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. The biggest addition though is of the automated manual transmission (AMT) on the more powerful diesel version. Renault also claims to have improved the packaging of the engine bay and have strengthened it in key areas to improve safety.

The AMT gearbox is available in the top RxL and RxZ variants and comes only in front-wheel-drive guise. Let’s start with the positives. This is by far the best iteration of the AMT we have experienced till date, across makes. This ZF-sourced system works well on the highway and part throttle gearshifts are relatively smooth. But as soon as you put your foot down you get that typical AMT pause as the hydraulic actuators struggle to downshift quickly enough to keep up the momentum. Even in stop-start traffic, power delivery can be jerky and upshifts at lower speeds feel painstakingly slow. It’s in the manual mode that this gearbox feels the best and there is a way of getting around this drawback by just lifting off before every shift. Unfortunately, this defeats the whole purpose of having an automatic in the first place.

Despite the slow gearbox, performance figures are quite impressive with 100kmph coming up in 13.61 seconds. But it’s in the drivability test where the Duster AMT suffers as it takes 8.08 seconds for the 20-80kmph dash and 10.46 seconds in the 40-100kmph kickdown. This makes it nearly two seconds slower than the Hyundai Creta automatic on both drivability runs.

We also sampled the AWD version of the Duster and as before we came away really impressed. The AWD variant uses shorter gearing as compared to the 4X2 variant and this helps its drivability considerably. There is loads of pulling power from the word go and even at speeds as low as 20kmph you can easily pull away in third gear. Renault seems to have made the clutch lighter too which makes town driving a hassle free affair.

Renault Duster Driving Dynamics

The New Renault Duster AMT is surprisingly a delight to drive. What came to notice instantly is that it responds well to throttle inputs. Drive with a heavy foot and the upshifts get delayed, thereby providing adequate power. The AMT is very easy to drive in the city. The good part is that the usual lag during shifts, that AMTs have, is reduced and is hardly felt while driving in a relaxed manner. Its only when you push the New Renault Duster AMT hard that the lag is evident.

Another impressive thing about the New Renault Duster AMT was that while driving in the manual mode, rev-limiter comes in to play only beyond 5000 rpm. This gives ample room to the driver for maneuvering the SUV as desired and is especially useful while driving in hilly areas and ghats. I would’ve preferred a slightly taller gear selector lever in the AMT. The lever in the New Renault Duster AMT feels a tad short and hence one needs to stretch out a bit more than normal, while driving in manual mode.

Renault Duster Braking & Safety

Talking about safety, the 2016 Renault Duster comes with dual front airbags and ABS. The AMT transmission also gets features like Hill Hold and ESP. There is also a traction control system on offer which does its job pretty well should you decide to have some fun around the twisties. In terms of after-sales service, Renault does have a not-so-good network and it just doesn’t match the quality levels of Hyundai for that matter.

The rear seats, despite being adjusted for my height (for reference I am six feet two inches tall), had acres of legroom, knee room and headroom. Just about good enough’ sums up the new Accord’s performance when equipped with the staple 2.2-litre diesel engine. The engine produces 148bhp – up 10bhp from the old Accord – yet retains its commendably smooth running. And although overall weight has risen, it’s not by enough to blow a big hole in what was already fairly leisurely acceleration. Honda’s own numbers suggest a 0-62mph time of 9.5sec, a time we matched to 60mph in testing.

Of more importance is the quietness of the engine at a steady cruise and the fact that it has the nicest transmission in the class, even taking the German quality brands into account. Six speeds are standard and the change quality is light yet deliciously precise. Refinement levels are exceptional for this class of car, with wind, road and engine noise kept to a bare minimum.

In the ranks of modern diesels, the more powerful 177bhp version of the 2.2-litre four-pot is much more commendable. Its 280lb ft torque maximum is on offer between 2000 and 2750rpm, although there is a decent spread of grunt throughout the rev range. The well-judged gear ratios, combined with that fantastic shift quality, ensure swift progress can always be maintained, not something that can always be said about the lower-powered model. Ask the diesel flagship for all it’s got and it will carry you to 62mph in 8.8sec and to a top speed of 136mph.

In the ranks of modern diesels, the more powerful 177bhp version of the 2.2-litre four-pot is much more commendable, with a good spread of torque.

The base 154bhp 2.0-litre petrol Accord feels surprisingly sluggish. The effortless mid-range urge of modern turbodiesels that we’re used to means that a revvy petrol engine like this one feels overwhelmed when asked to lug a large family car. Performance has to be extracted from the Accord by revving it surprisingly hard, and even shallow motorway gradients are enough to defeat this car’s tall sixth gear
