Audi Q7 Overview

The Q7 was the first SUV in Audi’s portfolio, introducing the Q moniker in the family in 2005. The first generation Q7 made a big impact in the luxury SUV segment across the globe and specially in the Indian car market. However, the first generation Q7 was getting quite dated off late amongst the newly updated Europeans but now Audi has finally launched the second generation model in India. The new Audi Q7 gets drastic changes inside out and we explore the new German to see if it really has what it takes.

Audi Q7 Look & Style

This stunner has the same body structure like its outgoing model. However, there are significant improvements on all the facets, especially on its front profile. Its hexagonal radiator grille now gets a thick surround. Also, it has a matte finish, that is rendering it a dynamic character. On either sides, it has a sleek headlight cluster with improved lighting design. This carries LED headlamps, indicators, static turning lights and headlight cleaning system as well.

Also, there are double arrow shaped daytime running lights, which further adds to its style. Both the front and rear bumpers are redesigned for a more masculine look. On its sides, there are fenders with curvy detailing and fitted with new design alloy wheels. It is equipped with body colored ORVMs along with door handles and aluminum roof rails. As for the rear, the LED taillight cluster is reshaped and equipped with dynamic indicators. Apart from these, all the other cosmetics are retained from its outgoing model. Also, it has a rear spoiler that compliments its exclusivity.

Audi Q7  Cabin & Space

The interiors of the new-gen Q7 are a big step forward and a major change in design from other Audis. The AC vents run across from the centre console to the left side end. The large AC vent has diffused air and it doesn’t focus into your face. The large Audi MMI screen pops up on press of a button. this doesn’t have a touchscreen but has a high definition display. After being so used to the similar Audi interior this is a welcome change. The brown leather wrapper steering wheel with even the dashboard gets this rich leather. The instrument binnacle is made of a LED screen with two small dials on both the sides for temperature and fuel gauge.

The gear lever is also wrapped in this leather. The lever is thick and it can shift modes with a glide from your palm. The MMI has a large touchpad as well. The rotor doesn’t get the four buttons, rather two that slide forth and back. With regards to space, this gen is a more spacious than the outgoing one. The second row of seats can slide back and forth to adjust the knee room for the third row. Our press demonstrator came with a spare tyre that was attached in the boot. This means only one seat in the third row. The all round visibility of the Q7 and the panoramic sunroof makes it great to drive in city.

Audi Q7 Engine & Performance

The Q7 gets both diesel and petrol engine options under its hood. The most powerful engine that is available with the Q7 is a 3.0 Litre TDI unit which produces about 272 Hp of peak power and 600 Nm of torque. This engine unit helps the Q7 to accelerate from 0-100 Km/h mark in just 6.3 seconds while it has a top speed of 234 km/h mark. While the 3.0 Litre TFSI unit produces about 333 Hp of peak power and 440 Nm of torque. This engine unit helps Q7 to accelerate from 0-100 km/h mark in just 6.1 seconds while it has a top speed of 250 Km/h mark.There is also a second variant of the 3.0 Litre TDI also on offer which produces about 218 Bhp of peak power and 500 Nm of torque. What is even more interesting is the fact that the Q7 will also be available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, the electric motor will be mated to a diesel unit. The diesel unit in particular will produce 258 Hp of peak power while the electric motor will separately develop about 94 Kw of power. Together the e-tron Q7 will deliver about 373 hp of peak power.Beside just the new powertrain option the Q7 also gets a newly developed, eight-speed tiptronic transmission which supplies power to all the 4 wheels.For the Indian market Audi has decided to launch the Q7 with the 3.0-liter TDI unit which is capable of producing about 272 Hp of peak power and 600 Nm of torque and like already mentioned above the engine is paired to an eight-speed tiptronic transmission which sends power to al the 4 wheels via the Audi Quattro all whel drive system.

Despite a curb weight of almost 5,000 pounds, the 2017 Audi Q7 is surprisingly maneuverable and nimble. Especially if the optional adaptive air suspension and four-wheel steering are specified, the Q7 drives as if it’s actually a size smaller, like Audi’s Q5. Even without the Adaptive Chassis option, though, the Q7 is sure-footed around turns and instills driver confidence thanks to strong, consistent brakes.This athleticism doesn’t come at the expense of ride quality, either. When equipped with the V6, accelerating to highway speeds or passing is easy, and the responsive eight-speed transmission is a nice added touch. Given the full LED headlamps, the massive hexagonal grille and those taut shoulder lines, you might think you are looking at Audi’s new A4 here, when in fact this is the noticeably more affordable A3 which has been comprehensively updated for 2017. Armed with Audi’s latest design language, improved feature list and a new petrol motor, the 2017 A3 makes for an attractive proposition. Here’s what has changed and how. Audi A3 Design & Style

For starters, it looks a lot similar to the A4 now thanks to the redesigned LED DRLs. The car that we got, featured all LED headlamps as well, though it is not a part of the standard kit. It now sports the hexagonal ‘Diamond-inspired’ single frame grille as a part of the family design. The front bumper has been redesigned and features slimmer air vents that lend a sporty appeal to the styling. The shoulder line is more prominent and at the rear, the tail lamps retain their shape but the detailing is now different and also boast dynamic turn indicators, like the ones on the new A4.

The rear bumper has been given an overhaul as well and now looks a bit more aggressive and sporty. Panoramic sunroof though is standard across the range. It also now runs on new 16-inch alloys shod with Bridgestone or Michelin rubber.

Audi A3 Cabin & Space

The A3’s interior isn’t very different from other Audis, but there are a few things that will make you sit up and take notice. The first thing is the MMI screen – it pops up out of a slot at the top of the centre console, which is very impressive. Paired to this is the rotary knob on the centre console which has a touchpad on the top. This is much like a laptop computer’s mousepad, and you can write on it with a finger and it will recognise the letters, no matter how bad the handwriting. (We tried it, it works.) The second is the new design of the air vents. Audi says they’re modelled on a jet fighter’s turbines. Claims of turbofan resemblance aside, they are very pretty things, and the bezels have to be rotated to cut airflow. The crowning glory is the central circle – pull to focus airflow, and push for a diffused effect. This should help in cooling all of you equally rather than just one ear or your fingers.

All the usual bells and whistles are present – leather upholstery with contrasting stitching, a very nice four-spoke steering wheel, a multi-function display, a CD player with different multimedia options and a 20 GB hard drive, and dual zone climate control. The AC is effective and has a rear blower as well. Sat nav is an optional extra for some variants but is standard for the top-spec variant.

The seats are comfortable, of course, but tall people should stick to the front. The rear is surprisingly roomy for the car’s size (and roofline), with just enough headroom and knee room for a six-footer. Three abreast is going to be a big ask, though. Two at the rear will be comfortable, what with the armrest and dual cupholders and even a 12V socket exclusively for the rear seat. The A3 gets access via the central armrest recess at the rear to the 425 litre boot, which is a lot larger than that figure suggests. If it isn’t large enough for you, the rear seats split and fold flat for greater convenience.

Audi A3 Engine & Transmission

The 2017 A3 comes with a choice of two power-plants – a 1.4-litre TFSI turbo petrol and the familiar 2-litre TDI diesel. Whereas the former is paired to a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox, the more efficient diesel works in conjunction with a 6-speeder – also a dual clutch unit.

Starting with the petrol variant, Audi has replaced the old 1.8-litre TFSI unit in favour of this 1.4-litre motor which makes 150bhp and 250Nm of torque between 1,500 and 3,000rpm. Unlike its competition, the petrol powered A3 comes with cylinder-on-demand tech, which shuts down two of the four cylinders when you’re just pottering around. Within city limits, the motor is surprisingly brisk, pulling strongly from around 2,000rpm. But despite making as much torque as the 1.8-litre unit, the new A3 doesn’t pull as hard as the older car. Where the 1.8-litre motor pushed you back in your seat, the 1.4-litre motor feels more linear and laidback in the way it goes about its business. As for refinement, the new A3 offers impressively low NVH, with a near silent idle and staying composed till about 4000rpm. Its only near the redline that the motor gets a bit loud. The 7-speed gearbox is undoubtedly quicker to respond than the competition and teamed with this engine’s eager power delivery, the surge of acceleration is addictive. The only downside to the gearbox is the jerky low speed behaviour and delay in response as you floor the throttle.

The 2-litre diesel continues to offer strong mid-range punch. It may be a little noisy when worked hard but it never feels vibey or harsh. Like in the older car, there is more than sufficient pulling power, all of which is efficiently transferred to the road via a 6-speed dual clutch automatic. Like its petrol-powered counterpart, gearshifts are rapid and smooth on the go but the overall response is a little jerky at crawling speeds.

Audi A3 Driving Dynamics

What we have here is, quite simply, one of the sweetest-handling Audi sedans we’ve come across in years. We’ve always found the handling of the bigger As to be really competent, but this one adds another element – fun. It’s simply a joy to chuck around corners, and that’s down to a number of factors. Primarily, it’s the very stiff chassis, which has allowed Audi to give the A3 softer suspension without corrupting the dynamics. Then there’s the steering, which though still not perfect, feels miles more direct and full of feel than just about any other recent Audi. The end result is a car that will eagerly dart into corners as quickly as you dare throw it. It feels light on its feet, there’s not too much understeer, with loads of grip, despite the lack of Quattro, and the body roll is all but imperceptible.

As for the ride, in the diesel, with its stiffer front end, you will feel a bit more of what’s going on under the tyres, particularly at city speeds over, for instance, a poorly paved piece of tarmac. Even so, it’s not as firm as the Mercedes A-class, and Audi’s equivalent of a ‘rough road package’ for India (read: added stiffness) seems to have been calibrated perfectly for our conditions. The petrol model is even better, with a slightly softer edge, especially when you consider our test cars were top-spec, wearing 17-inch wheels on 45-profile tyres. It’s impressive that Audi has managed to achieve this sort of compliance without the adaptive suspension trickery that you find in the bigger cars. The only fly in the ointment is road noise, and a fair bit of it comes into the cabin as you pick up speed. All said and done, Audi has nailed the ride and handling package on the A3, and for once it’s something we hope filters upwards into the next A4.

The Audi A3 received 5-stars in the Euro NCAP crash test. There are abundant safety features on offer and the car feels very well built. Front and side airbags are standard across the range and the higher end models also get rear airbags and knee airbag for the driver. Audi A3 Final Thought

The A3 has a lot going for it – it looks great, especially in scarlet with 17-inch rims, has a ton of features that aren’t present at the price, and has enough performance to keep customers happy. It is also a first mover in the segment. Surprisingly, at the price that we expect it to go on sale, Rs 26-28 lakh, it will be great value for money as well, so we have no doubt that should Audi stick to that price, it will have another great product flying off their shelves.

Audi A4 Exterior

The A4 diesel shares its design with the petrol-powered model, meaning it looks neat, classy and inoffensive in typical Audi fashion. The understated yet impressive design is part of the reason Audi has revelled in big success with B7 and B8 gen A4 models that have aged rather well.This latest-gen A4 is slightly longer and wider than its predecessor but retains the balanced stance nonetheless. That said, there is a lot more in terms of sharp creases and clever detailing than the previous car; the front-end for instance houses the signature Audi grille which sits lower and is broader than before. The all LED headlights, too, are different with their serrated lower edges.

Like the headlamps, the rear lights are also LEDs with the sharp recesses in their detailing. Interestingly, the only design bit differentiating the diesel model is the twin exhaust pipes (petrol-powered A4 gets a single tailpipe). Overall, despite the sharpened front, there’s comparatively less in the way of dramatic swoops and creases and more in the way of understated modesty that we have come to expect from Audi sedans.

Audi A4 Interiors

The interiors of the A4 diesel are similar to the petrol model that we drove earlier. Our test car had an all-black theme with wood inserts and it looked sporty. The steering wheel gets an aluminum insert at the bottom while the centre console gets the familiar MMI system with the control knob and other buttons. The MMI is intuitive to use and has a lot of functions. Sound quality from the audio system is good but not as eargasmic as other high-end cars. The Virtual Cockpit is the best part about the A4 and the inbuilt navigation which shows detailed information is very good. The front seats are comfortable and have good adjustment options while at the rear, space is a bit restrained and kneeroom is tight while the seats continue to remain a good place to be in.

Audi A4 Gearbox

The petrol-powered A4 may have a relatively small engine for its class but this diesel-powered model is right up there with the rest when it comes to displacement and power figures. Speaking of which, the 2-litre, four-cylinder turbo diesel motor makes 190bhp of power and 400Nm of torque. More importantly, the new A4 diesel is quite a bit lighter than the old car (thanks to usage of aluminium in construction) which means the engine has less weight to lug around.This motor has always been a sprightly and willing little thing and now with the less weight and a much quicker dual-clutch automatic gearbox (as against the CVT in the old A4), performance is strong right from the word go. There is a hint of turbo lag at lower revs but because of the broad torque band, this engine pulls strong once past 1,800rpm, revving out till 4,500rpm without sounding coarse at all. There’s a clean surge of power off the line and the A4 diesel gets up to speed rapidly enough. So much so that it does 0-100kmph in 7.94 seconds which is impressive considering that the more powerful Mercedes C250d hits the same mark in 7.34 seconds. That said, it’s the BMW 320d M-Sport that’s still the quickest accelerating executive sedan, taking just 7.14 seconds (thanks to launch control). In terms of in-gear acceleration, the Audi’s got the better of its rivals – it took all of 5.79 seconds to complete the 40-100kmph sprint, as against 6.12 seconds and 5.87 seconds for the 320d and C250d respectively. The A4’s surprisingly quick in-gear times has a lot to do with the 7-speed DSG that now comes as standard. As you would expect, this dual-clutch unit manages shifts with superb intuition, swapping cogs quickly when worked hard. Even under normal driving conditions, the gearshifts are silky smooth and right when you need them. Thankfully, the indecisive response from standstill – a typical DSG trait – can be hardly felt in this car. The different driving modes (including Comfort, Dynamic, Auto and Individual) do not change the way the suspension works but they do alter the DSG’s responsiveness – the gearbox hangs onto lower gears, shifts up at higher rpm in Dynamic and in Comfort, begins freewheeling as soon as you get off the throttle.

Audi A4 Rideing

The Audi A4 has a very good ride and the suspension soaks up bumps with ease. There is no stiffness and the sedan remains fairly composed most of the times. The suspension also feels very silent and there are no unnecessary thuds on sharp undulations too. Talking about the steering, it is direct and precise but lacks feel and even though it provides safe and predictable handling, it just lacks the involvement that rivals in the same segment provide. You can better the steering feel by switching to Dynamic mode which stiffens the wheel. The suspension remains the same in all the modes though. The tyres have excellent grip and even the stopping power is very good.

The Audi A4 features disc brakes with calipers and anti-lock braking system, and electronic stability control program for effective braking and controlling. Audi A4 Bottomline

This is not an S4, but if you ask me, it is the next best thing. Like a watered-down version of it. The car most certainly resonates with some sort of exclusivity and sportiness, yet it looks like it is trying to keep it all to itself. No badges on it. It is gray, dignified, but sophisticated in some strange way. It looks like a definition of a sleeper. Only if it could have a bit more power. That would be awesome. Wait a minute, would you remap the ECU on a highly limited Audi A4? Would that be a bit too much?
