BMW 7 Series Overview

This M Sport is an updated variant of the sixth-gen BMW 7 Series that we tested last year. Wait, isn’t this the car that was launched in mid-2016? Yes, but BMW wanted to add some more features to their full-sized flagship sedan. The top-of-the-line trim is still the M-Sport (which we have on test here), which now comes with additional comfort features which we’ll come to later.

So the 6th generation 7 Series comes with a chassis which is made up of high strength steel, aluminium and they have used carbon fibre in key areas to increase rigidity and reduce weight. This being a flagship from the Munich manufacturer, we expect nothing less than loads of tech onboard and more importantly we are ought to discover how much more does it pamper the occupants with the additional features. BMW 7 Series Design & Style

To say that the new 7 is huge would be an understatement. Measuring over 5.2m in length, it cuts a seriously imposing figure as it waltzes up the road. This is also down to some of the familiar BMW design details like the bulging kidney grille, the strong shoulder-line and the beautifully detailed headlamps and taillights. The 740Li, in fact, is only available in the Design Pure Excellence Signature trim which uses plenty of chrome bits, but it’s a little too understated as it lacks the visual fanfare of the M Sport trim (available in other variants) that gets you more angular front and rear bumpers with oversized air dams upfront and a faux diffuser at the back.

Despite occupying more road space than before, the new 7 Series is around 100kg lighter than before. This is down to the body being made out of aluminium and carbon-fibre reinforced plastic. The 740Li’s also got more driver-centric technologies like adaptive driving modes and self-levelling air suspension that can raise and drop the ride height.

BMW 7 Series Cabin & Comfort

The outside may lack the drama of the M Sport variant, but the interior more than makes up for it. It’s beautifully crafted with swathes of high quality leather on the dashboard and the seats, with fittings that are finely matched to the surface that they butt up against. The incredible detailing on the lacquered dark wood and the brushed aluminium finish on the controls are some of the quality highlights in here. For more details on BMW 7 Series check Tec

There are a wide variety of gadgets, too. You get a fairly massive 10.25-inch touch screen display for the iDrive, 360-degree cameras and 3D imaging. And if that’s not impressive enough, the 740Li also comes with a 7-inch tablet that is neatly integrated into the rear armrest. The tablet can be used to control several functions including front and rear seat adjustment, air conditioning, ambient light and of course, the entertainment functions linked to the iDrive.

The thing with the 740Li is that it isn’t an out-an-out chauffeur-driven choice like the 730Ld. Rather it’s more of a performance limo, one that can be driven by the buyer more often than not. In this regard, the BMW does quite well as comfort levels are top notch, thanks to a gazillion adjustments for the steering and the seat. That being said, rear seat occupants aren’t left out, with masses of head and knee room.

The rear sunroof combined with the multiple ambient lighting options throughout the cabin really elevate the mood. Now for the all-important rear seat, the comfort in the 740Li is truly exceptional with acres of knee room and back support. The backrest and seat base can not only be electrically reclined and adjusted, but also be used as effective stress busters, thanks to the eight-level massage function.

BMW 7 Series Engine & Transmission

The 730Ld’s 3.0-litre inline-six turbodiesel direct-injection motor offers strong performance with 620Nm of torque peaking from a low 2,000rpm, while 262bhp of max power comes in at 4,000rpm. This engine is super refined and there is hardly any noise filtering into the cabin thanks to the excellent sound insulation. In fact, at idle, it’s nearly electric car quiet. Once on the road, it gets even more impressive. The crisp throttle response makes you feel in sync with the mill, while the ZF-sourced eight-speed gearbox goes hand in hand with the engine. It is fairly quick to respond to throttle inputs and the gear-ratios are well-thought-out too. Within the city or on the highway, the 7’s torquey engine, does a great job of pulling away from other cars and traffic, eventually also making for a very calm and relaxed drive.

The car features three engine modes – sport, comfort and eco pro. The engine is most enthusiastic in sending power to the rear wheels in the sport mode, while the throttle response is optimised in the comfort and eco pro modes. This is keeping in mind the relaxed demeanor this kind of luxury sedan is supposed to have.BMW 7 series delivers an average of 10.5kmpl in the city and 13kmpl on open highways. The diesel engine on the other hand gives a higher mileage of 16.77kmpl.

BMW 7 Series Ride & Handling

The sedan’s handling around the bends is quite impressive too. Defying its size and weight with this BMW, you can push through corners much faster than you anticipate and the well weighted steering gives you good feedback too. Ofcourse it’s not a sports car and the soft air suspension makes it feel a bit disconnected and floaty. In terms of ride it isn’t perfect though. At low speeds in comfort the suspension does an admirable job of isolating the passengers from the road surface.

But typical of air springs, sudden sharp edged road irregularities does catch it out (you can hear a loud thunk inside the cabin). Even at high speeds comfort mode is a bit too soft as the car wallows over undulating surfaces. This is where we felt, that either Sport or Adaptive setting worked best where excessive body movements are kept well in check. In addition, the low ground clearance also makes it imperative to go slow over the larger ruts and bumps despite it getting lift function to increase its clearance.

BMW 7 Series Braking & Safety

Also on the safety front, a bevy of safety features including dual airbags, front side airbags, rear seat side airbags, knee airbags, front seat active head restraints, 360 degree camera, reverse assist, ABS, EBD traction control etc. continue to build on the reputation for occupant safety.BMW 7 Series features ventilated disk brakes for both the front and the rear wheels. In addition, it features ABS, EBD, hill assist, traction control EBD and ESP. For additional safety, it comes with airbags, central locking, child seat mount, child safety lock, parking assistant and engine immobilizer.

BMW 7 Series Last Words

The latest 7 Series is undoubtedly the most convincing of all its generations and the new 740Li does a great job of mixing performance with top-notch quality and comfort. It’s a great buy for those who would like to match sports car acceleration while enjoying the luxury of high-end materials and acres of space.

There’s also a 750Li with a 450bhp version of the M5’s 4.4-litre V8 but as we see it, the smaller and considerably less expensive 740Li is plenty quick for our roads and it simply makes more sense most of the time. Speaking of which, the 730Ld diesel is also fairly quick for daily duties, however, you simply cannot miss the refinement of a 6-cylinder petrol from BMW.

 BMW 5 Series Overview

BMW launched the sixth generation 5-Series in 2010 and last year the company gave the vehicle a mid-life facelift. The changes to the car aren’t a world apart as the facelifted F10 version gets subtle changes all around along with the addition of new features. The BMW 5-Series is a hot favourite of enthusiasts the world over but in 520d avatar, it’s trying to woo those who want a practical yet luxurious vehicle. Our test car came with the Modern Line trim, which focusses on luxury over sportiness. The BMW 520d is also the most popular variant of the 5-Series lineup in India and we got behind the wheel to gauge what’s new. Apply car loan for BMW 5 series at Fincarz.

 BMW 5 Series Design

The 2017 BMW 530i comes standard with LED adaptive headlights, 18-inch wheels, driver-selectable vehicle settings (altering steering, transmission response and throttle calibration), LED accent lights, LED foglights, power-folding and auto-dimming heated mirrors, automatic wipers, a sunroof, adaptive cruise control, dual-zone automatic cruise control, a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, driver and passenger 16-way-adjustable sport seats with power-adjustable side bolsters and driver memory functions, a 40/20/40-split folding rear seat and premium vinyl upholstery. Standard technology features include the iDrive interface (knob/button controller and 10.3-inch display), a navigation system, gesture and voice controls, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, BMW emergency services, and a 205-watt, 12-speaker sound system with a CD player, HD radio, an auxiliary audio jack, a USB port, a media player interface and 20 gigabytes of digital music storage.

Options include a 600-watt, 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system or a 1,400-watt, 16-speaker Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system, 20-way-adjustable multicontour driver and front passenger seats with ventilation and massage, a rear-wheel steering system and adaptive dampers. The Adaptive Drive system package combines the adaptive dampers with active stabilizer bars.

An M Sport package includes unique body trim, a lowered suspension and 19-inch wheels, a sport leather steering wheel and unique interior trim. Twenty-inch wheels are optional on the 540i when the M Sport package is selected.

 BMW 5 Series Cabin

The Modern Line of the BMW 520d gets all beige interiors which do give the cabin an airy feel but might not appeal to some. The dashboard is very similar to the old model but BMW has made small changes to boost the luxury appeal of the 5-Series. There are brushed silver inserts on the dashboard, including on the third spoke of the 3-spoke steering wheel. Light coloured wood inserts are placed on the dashboard, centre console and doors. The car uses a 6.5-inch screen for the infotainment system but the iDrive controller isn’t a touch-pad like on the 530d. Build quality is good and the front seats offer excellent support too.For more info on BMW 5 Series check Tec

At the rear, seating comfort continues to be excellent with ample cushioning all around. There is space for two at the rear as the transmission hump prevents a third passenger from squeezing into the rear bench. The big update to the 5-Series is the new instrument cluster, which isn’t a conventional unit. Instead, it uses an LCD screen and can change the display based on the driving mode. There are three modes on offer – Eco Pro, Comfort and Sport, the complete console changing colours and layout in each of these modes. BMW hasn’t skipped on equipment on this base 5-Series variant, it still comes with 8 airbags, sunroof, leather seats, steering mounted paddles, dual-zone climate control, electric steering and seat adjust (the latter with memory function).

 BMW 5 Series Gearbox

All the variants are interestingly of a 2.0 litre capacity with only the BMW 5 Series 530d M Sport and BMW 5 Series GT 530d LE offered as a 3.0 litre engines. The engine performance of the BMW 5 Series 525d Luxury+ is slightly tweaked to offer higher power compared to the usual engine variant. The three key variants however are BMW 520d, BMW 525d and BMW 530d. The BMW 530d produces a maximum output of 258 bhp and the torque reaches a peak of 540 Nm at 1500 rpm. The BMW 525d however offers 218 bhp out maximum output.

The third variant BMW 520d does not fall short in terms of performance and generates a maximum output of 184 bhp decent 380 Nm or torque at mere 1750 rpm which shows the effective power distribution inside the vehicle. Following Common Rail Direct Injection in combination with a turbocharger, the BMW 520d offers a top speed of a remarkable 231 kmph. Since all the variants are predominantly diesel oriented, they come with impressive mileage. BMW 530d offers an impressive mileage of 14.69 kmpl while the BMW 525d offers a slightly higher 17.09 kmpl. However most impressive of the lot is the BMW 520d which generates 18.48 kmpl mileage. The emission figures of all the vehicles comply the national regulations and are noted to be at 154.75 gms per kilometre and 114.47 gms per kilometre for BMW 525d and BMW 520d respectively.

 BMW 5 Series Driving

This being a German luxury sedan, it rides low on the road and that too after BMW has raised the ground clearance for the Indian market. The low ground clearance means that you have to slow down significantly for speed breakers. The ride is a little hard even in the comfort or ECO PRO mode and tends to give you feedback even for the smallest imperfections on the road. This is down to the large 18-inch wheels and massive run-flat tyres which are tuned for fast driving but in turn make your ride much harder.

However, the ride, despite being hard in the 530d, is much softer when compared to the previous generation car. At high speeds the 530d is very stable. The electric power steering from BMW is the best I have ever used and it weighs up quite well at high speeds. However, it still does feel heavy even at lower speeds. The massive brakes are well suited to this car of this size and have ferocious stopping power.

 BMW 5 Series Safety

It has an active protection, which includes attentiveness assist, which enhances the safety in case of critical situation. Dual front airbags along with head and side airbags are an effective protection in the event of any collision. The cabin has an advanced electronic immobilizer along with crash sensors, which safeguards it from any unauthorized entry. Its rigid body structure has side and front impact protection beams, which enhances safety of the occupants sitting inside. It has runflat tyres with reinforced side walls along with runflat indicator that warns the driver with a light when there is a slight drop in tyre pressure. For price details  on BMW 5 Series in Bangalore check AutoZhop

It is also equipped with anti lock braking along with emergency brake assist function. It also has cornering brake control, which enhances the stability in sharp curves. For enhancing the suspension mechanism, it is decked with a dynamic stability control, which constantly monitors the driving status, modifies directional stability and traction by brake management system. Apart from these, this sedan is bestowed with emergency spare wheel, passive pedestrian protection, electric parking brake with auto hold function, company’s condition based service (intelligent maintenance system) and much more.

 BMW 5 Series Final Word

The new BMW 5 Series looks elegant and has new features, which its predecessor missed. It drives well and also offers the comfort and luxury you would expect from a chauffeur-driven car. Still if the latter is your primary need, the 5 doesn’t come anywhere close to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. After all, the E-Class is the only long wheelbase model in this segment. Nonetheless, at Rs 53.6 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi), the new 5 Series still has sufficient kit to compete against the Audi A6, the Jaguar XF and the Volvo S90 in our country.

BMW X1 Features, Transmission & Test Drive

BMW X1 Overview

The X1 is one popular entry level compact Crossover from the premium Auto manufacturer BMW, launched almost 6 years ago and it was a grand success across the globe and sold more than 730,000 units worldwide. Although this was a much smaller vehicle compared to bigger X series SUV like the X3, X5 and X6 but the X1 still carried all the styling cues from the bigger BMW X models which set it apart from the rest of the Crossover available out there.

Recently BMW introduced the second generation X1 and there is no doubt in the fact that it looks more mature, proportionate and dynamic than its predecessor. Apart from the styling the X1 also hosts a couple of new features which is worth mentioning including the full LED headlamps as an option, Dynamic damper controls, BMW heads up display and lastly the Driving Assistant Plus system. Book a test drive for BMW X1 in Hyderabad at Tryaldrive.

The new X1 is also taller than the previous generation vehicle which also has raised the seating position of both the front and rear passengers which actually is an added advantage for the person driving the SUV because they can now get a commanding view of the road ahead. The space inside the Crossover has also increased comparatively which means more seating comfort inside for the passengers. What is even more interesting is also the fact that for the very first time BMW has launched any SUV with the front wheel drive system, the X1 uses the new UKL platform which is also used by the Mini Cooper. Beside the front wheel drive BMW has also equipped the new generation X1 with two petrol and three diesel units which also belongs from the family of BMW’s new family of engines.

BMW X1 Exteriors

The good news here isthat the new X1 looks more purposeful and SUV-like than the car it replaces; one of the reasons the earlier X1 didn’t do too well. It has a buff front end, SUV overtones, and a marked improvement in street creed courtesy larger dimensions. As mentioned earlier, the new X1 is taller than the outgoing model, plus, it sits higher off the ground and is wider as well. And though it is shorter in both length and wheelbase compared to the older X1, it still manages to look bigger.

Additionally, it has a better-defined design language. We are no fans of how the new X1 looks from the front – it’s a little dowdy if you ask us – but from the rear three quarter, with its wrap around LED tail lamps, the upward swooping shoulder line and tapering roof, not to mention the gorgeous 18-inch wheels, the new X1 does draw glances. And if we consider the M Sport variant, the new X1 looks more desirable too.

BMW X1 Interiors

Looking at the generous dimensions of the vehicle on the outside, I was a bit surprised when I opened the door to step into the driver’s seat. The cabin feels compact and even the dashboard and centre console seem to have a compact layout. Just like any other BMW, ergonomics are spot on and the dash is very driver centric. Materials used all over feel very upmarket and premium but when you drive this X1 back to back with any other car from the same stable, say the 3-Series, that is when you realise how superior the other car feels.

There are lesser number of buttons on the steering wheel, centre console, etc. and even though you do get a lot of features, the X1 does make you feel evident that yes it is one of the cheapest BMWs around. Even the round knob that is used to control the infotainment system is smaller in size. I found the front seats very comfortable and finding that perfect driving position is super easy thanks to the electric seat controls. The driving position itself feels much like that of a crossover and if you’re expecting a proper SUV-like driving position that feels commanding, then you’ll be disappointed. For BMW X1 visit tec.net.in

The rear seats are comfortable too and space is better than the old X1. You also get a basic centre armrest at the rear. The best part about the new X1 is the large windows that BMW has endowed and it makes the cabin feel very airy and lends a positive vibe. Gone is the claustrophobic feel that you get in cars with smaller glass areas. If you’re buying a car for Rs. 40 odd lakhs you expect it to have a ton of fancy gizmos (a la Skoda Superb or Ford Endeavour) but BMW is known to skip a lot of features from the standard equipment list and the X1 is no different. It misses out on vital stuff like a parking camera. It doesn’t even have cruise control.

BMW X1 Performance

The BMW X1 comes with the same 2.0-litre oil burner that also provides grunt to the 3-Series. The new B47 unit has improved over the older N47 plant and this time it comes mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission from Aisin rather than ZF. Acceleration pace is pretty good and 0-100 km/hr comes up in 7.8 seconds which isn’t too bad. The biggest change here is the fact that the new X1 is a darn front wheel drive car while it also gets an AWD option. Also gone is the manual handbrake of the older model which is replaced by a puny little button. A little less sideways fun now, eh?

The diesel engine puts out 190 BHP of power and 400 Nm of torque. Switch on the car and start driving and the first thing you notice is that the engine feels a tad bit noisier in the cabin, especially compared to the 320d. There is some amount of turbo lag which isn’t really bothersome and the X1 chugs around nicely with low throttle inputs needed inside the city. The Aisin tranny is good at its job and cogs are changed smoothly.

On the highways, the BMW X1 properly comes to life when the RPM needle starts hovering around the mid way mark. There is a very good surge of power and the compact SUV gathers pace quickly enough to touch 200 km/hr without making you wait for long. Eco Pro mode is best used in the city when you want to extract a couple of extra kms by compromising a bit on the power delivery. Comfort mode as you all know is suited for both city as well as highway driving while Sport mode holds on to the RPMs much longer, thus providing power as soon as you mash the throttle. Expect a fuel efficiency of 12-13 km/l if driven sanely and if you’ve had Redbull before stepping into the car then your wings (and fast driving!) will bring the efficiency down by a couple of kms per litre.

BMW X1 driving

Ride is probably the new BMW X1’s weakest link. At slow speeds, it is firm which means there’s unnecessary bobbing. And if you happen to hit a pothole, a poorly resurfaced section or even a manhole cover, the X1 sends a rude jolt inside the cabin along with a noisy thud. At speed, it jiggles and the thudding over poor surfaces continues unabated. The 50 profile runflats are to blame here, of course, but the suspension setup is equally suspect.

At least the X1 handles well. It has a quick steering, a fairly responsive front end that turns into bends without a fuss, and though it rolls under hard cornering, grip and chassis balance on the X1 is impressive. It’s great under braking too – hunkered down, stable and unaffected by the change in surface. However, we would have preferred the brakes to be a little less grabby in the initial bit of travel, which makes modulation a bit challenging. These refuse to fade as well.

BMW X1 Safety

The BMW X1 comes with safety features like 6 airbags, ABS, EBD, BA, DTC, CBC, DSC, Runflat Indicator, etc. The automaker also has a widely spread sales and service network in major cities in India.

BMW X1 Round Up

We absolutely loved the new X1 styling and added features both on its exterior as well as interior. Although what we loved the most is that BMW has also taken care of the interior room and now this compact Crossover comes with extra bit of room for both its front as we all rear seats passengers. The refreshed new engine too is a boon for the Crossover which provides better power delivery along with improved fuel efficiency. This is also the very first time that the X1 ditches its RWD and adapts FWD which will be preferred by many. The new-gen X1 will showcased in some upcoming auto shows and will be launched towards the month of October and we Indians have to wait until the next year to get a glimpse of this Crossover.
