Fiat Linea Overview

The Fiat Linea 125S is a higher powered version of the Linea T-Jet. The Linea has always been a connoisseur’s choice and it has some unique things about it. The ride and handling and the superior build are some strengthen of the Linea which the competition is not able to match even today. How good is the Fiat Linea 125S? Is it worth buying? Read on for the review of the Fiat Linea 125S.

Fiat Linea Royale Edition has also been launched recently. This comes with cosmetic changes on the outside and inside. This is being offered at extra cost of INR 35,000. There is a clear differentiator in the styling and there are several elements of the Linea Royale that help to differentiate the two.

Fiat Linea Exterior & Style

On the looks front, the Fiat Linea 125S looks exactly the same as the regular Linea. The styling looks good and the dimensions of the car feel proportionate. However, in the sea of new competitors entering the market with their bold styling elements, the Linea does feel a bit sobered down. Nothing much has been done to differentiate the 125S trim apart from a badge on the bootlid and front fenders. To be honest, I was a bit disappointed on seeing the car because I was really expecting Fiat to offer the sedan in the same blue shade that was shown at the 2016 Auto Expo. Unfortunately though, that colour isn’t offered even as an option.

Fiat Linea Interior & Space

The Linea 125 S is very similar to its lesser-powered sibling on the inside, with the exception of a new touchscreen for the infotainment system, replete with navigation and Bluetooth connectivity. The dashboard is attractive in design, with a large swath of soft-touch plastic sandwiched between hard, scratchy plastics. The touchscreen is quite tiny, though it is easy to use and features high-definition display. The only grouse is the positioning of the unit itself which is a bit low requiring you to take your gaze quite far off from the road.

One of the Linea’s biggest problems has not been rectified with the 125 S – the poor driver-seating position. The steering wheel juts out too much and the long-travel clutch and other pedals are located too far away, compelling you into a stretched out position. The front seats, however, are large and comfortable. The rear is not the most spacious in the segment, and headroom is particularly tight, and while the seat is generally comfortable, the seatback is a bit flat.

The equipment list is still strong, with navigation, automatic headlights, auto AC and rain-sensing wipers, to name a few. The remote-operable boot is a roomy 500 litres, though access to it is restricted by a narrow and high loading lip.

Fiat Linea Engine & Gearbox

The Linea 125S is powered by the same 1.4-litre turbocharged T-Jet petrol engine which does duty in the Linea T-Jet and Avventura. The Linea 125S gets a higher state of tune, though. The car now churns out 125bhp of power as again 112bhp of he regular Linea T-jet. This is the same engine that also powers the Abarth Punto and the Abarth 595 Competizione, but in different states of tune. The engine comes mated to a five-speed manual transmission. The Fiat Linea 125S is a scorcher and an extremely fun to drive machine. Fiat cars are known for their excellent ride and handling and also their precise steering feedback. The Fiat Linea 125S is not any different. This car is squarely aimed at self-driven enthusiasts.

Get behind the wheel and you will fall in love with it. The Linea T-JET was perfect and this one is just even better. Fiat cars are so much fun to drive and the Linea is another great example of it. The Linea T-JET is one of the most fun cars to drive and own.The Fiat Linea 125S delivers a fuel efficiency of around 10-14 km/l in a mix of city and highway driving. Fiat Linea Driving Dynamics

The hydraulic steering has a nice, old-school feel to it, and it sends a good amount of feedback your way. However, it is heavier than some electrically operated systems and you can feel so around town. The car does not feel as composed as its predecessor at high speeds, but it corners with a nice heft. On the positive side, low-speed ride quality is among the best in its segment. The suspension feels solid and is absorbent and has the ability to swallow bumps and potholes. Add to this, the best-in-class ground clearance of 190mm, and you get a car very capable over bad roads.

Fiat Linea Safety & Security

The Fiat Linea 125S comes with ABS and dual front airbags. There is no other safety tech on offer. Fiat’s service has been pretty dismal and there are very few service centres in the country. This is one of the major downsides of even recommending the Linea to anyone. Ownership experience isn’t that great and with hardly any dealers in sight, where will you book your car?

Fiat Linea Final Word

The Linea was always a good sedan, with decent engines, a solid build quality and lots of Italian flair. Those qualities have carried over to the 125 S, and additionally, now there’s more power, resulting in an even better driving experience, and the oh-so-in-demand touchscreen. Add to this, a competitive price of Rs 10.46 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). However, recommending one is a tricky affair, because all Fiat cars are ultimately let down by a harrowing ownership experience. The sales and after-sales service infrastructure for Fiat cars are not the best, which is a caveat to bear in mind.
