Mercedes Benz GLE Class Overview

The Mercedes-Benz GLE is a luxury SUV offered by the German carmaker in India which is based on the previous generation E-Class. It is powered by one petrol engine and two diesel engines. The petrol engine is a 2,996 cc unit that generates 333 hp of power at 5,250 rpm and 480 Nm of torque from 1,600.x` It is mated to a 7 speed automatic transmission. The smaller diesel engine is a 2,143 cc unit that produces 204 hp of power at 3,800 rpm and 500 Nm of torque.

This motor is mated to the 9G-Tronic 9 speed automatic gearbox. The larger diesel engine generates 258 hp of power at 3,400 rpm and 620 Nm of torque at 1,600 rpm. This engine is also paired 9G-Tronic 9 speed automatic transmission. It measures 4,819 mm in length, 2,141 mm in width, 1,796 mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,915 mm. Mercedes Benz GLE Class Exteriors

Apart from the change in badging, this mid-life facelifted model gets a few cosmetic changes even if the size of the SUV remains the same as the outgoing M-Class. The fascia makes it clear in the first glance that the changes are in line with Mercedes-Benz’s latest design language. The grille and the pinned-back headlights remind you of the other new siblings with a similar front. However, the tall bonnet with sharp lines have retained the aggressive stance of the SUV. The headlamps with projectors also house the daylight running lamps (DRLs) forming the eyebrows like in other models.

The silhouette looks similar to the one of the previous car, not really something that needed any improvement. However, what has pleased me are the changes at the back which have given the GLE a better look. The wraparound tail lamps are redesigned with LEDs and look sleeker than the ones on the previous model. Adding further to the appeal is the re-profiled bumper set with dual exhaust tips. The chrome scuff plates have been retained to protect the paint from being chipped off in case big heavy bags are being loaded. The typical ML styling cues are still retained by the signature wraparound rear-quarter window behind the C-pillar

Mercedes Benz GLE Class Interiors

Just like the exterior the interior too has received significant amount of changes. Step inside and the first thing that will catch you attention is the huge media display screen that has been partially integrated into the dashboard while the air con vents are surrounded by the silver shadow surround. While take a look around the cabin and you will also notice that the central console also houses the controller for the Mercedes COMMAND system which by the way also gets a touchpad.

Mercedes has also offered new colors for the interior while there are plenty of choices of colors to choose from for the interior. When it comes to fit and finish and quality of the materials inside nobody can actually complain anything because they look perfect from every angle. The steering wheel itself looks far sportier and stylish. When it comes to interior space and comfort everything including the space offered seems identical to the already available M Class. The seats too look comfortable and supportive. The rear seat too offers comfortable seating for three because of the flat floor.

Mercedes Benz GLE Class Performance

Mercedes is offering GLE 250d and 350d variants in India, yes, the ‘CDI’ moniker too has been replaced with ‘d’ for the diesel models. The 250d gets a 2.1-litre 4-cylinder diesel engine producing 204 BHP and 500 Nm. We drove the GLE 350d which gets a 3.0-litre V6 diesel mill that churns out 258 BHP and 620 Nm. The GLE moves with a smooth and linear progress initially and once past the mid-range, it pulls like whoosh! Refinement is at its best, no diesel clatter at lower revs and near the redline the 6-pot oil burner sounds a bit sporty. There is a wee bit of turbo lag but the meaty mid-range is what makes the GLE feel like it has wings, strong yet effortless acceleration.

Finally the 7G-TRONIC transmission has been replaced by a 9-speed 9G-TRONIC gearbox, which is lighter, more fuel efficient and highly responsive than the former. The gears are stacked closely and hence gear changes are brisk, no more do you feel the power dip while changing the cogs. The steering mounted paddle shifts are now more fun to use since you get the right gear at the right time. The 9-speed transmission is quite active for multiple downshifts and also offers relaxed cruising ability. The engine spins at just 1150 RPM at 100 km/hr in ninth gear.

The intelligent DYNAMIC SELECT system gives you a choice of five modes – Comfort, Sport, Slippery, Individual and Off-Road. This system changes parameters of the engine, transmission, steering and suspension. In Comfort, the throttle response is subdued while the gears change early for a smooth drive and in Sport, it’s the opposite to extract the max out of the engine and transmission which shifts near the 4500 RPM redline. You can tweak each aspect individually with the ‘Individual’ mode. The system can also adapt to your driving style and tweak the mechanicals accordingly. Mercedes Benz GLE Class Riding

This a good old school design SUV with hosts of modern features. All three models are 4matic and this indeed works very well. There is a special feature about the 4matic. After a speed of 120 km/h the individual power to all 4 wheels gets cut off ait is same power to each wheel. This helps providing more traction and less chance of failure. Because of the weight and soft suspension there is a slight understeer at high speed corners.

On the bright side the GLE has an amazingly plush ride. The seats are soft and the bumps do not filter into the cabin especially to the people. There is enough boot place to carry half a house if shifting and the 2nd row seats go completely flat and can be use as a double bed. Thank god for the new 9G-tronic. It eliminates all the flaws of the 7G-Tronic and is way less jerky. Also the gear shift time has reduced drastically. And incase you do want a little fun you have paddle shifts to get into formula one mode.

Mercedes Benz C Class Overview

Ever since its launch, the C-Class has been among the best-selling Mercedes-Benz cars in India. Mercedes-Benz’s C-Class has been ruling the entry-level executive luxury sedan segment for years, thanks to the updates given to the saloon at regular intervals. In 2015, the car entered the new generation when it received the S-Class inspired design. Though, the engine options remains unchanged. The new-gen C-Class is continued to be available in a 2.0-litre petrol and a 2.2-litre diesel engines. Check for car loan at Fincarz.

Mercedes Benz C Class Exteriors

Mercedes-Benz has taken a completely new approach towards the design of the new C-Class. The company has ditched the previous car’s conservative looks for a new design, which looks heavily inspired by the new S-Class. The design has been also influenced by aerodynamics to keep wind resistance at a minimum level. The front fascia with the Avantgarde grille and the teardrop-shaped headlamps look very similar to that of the super saloon and together with larger air vents and bumper design, give the new C-Class a new aggression. It also gets an intelligent full LED headlamp system with an adaptive main beam. The side profile gets a strong shoulder line, which divides the profile into three sections- window and door handles, door profile and skirt line running in line with the wheels. The new C-Class is offered in five colours – cavansite blue, citrine brown, polar white, iridium silver and obsidian black.

Mercedes Benz C Class Interiors

The C-Class has been Mercedes’ entry-level sedan for quite a long time but not anymore. The introduction of the CLA has led to the C-Class going upmarket and as soon as you step inside the car, that’s immediately apparent. The interiors of the new C-Class are a class above its predecessor, while inspiration from the S-Class is obvious, the dashboard has its own aura with a mix of sporty and luxury in it. The dual tone dash of the new C-Class look rich and the centre console gets high gloss lime wood finish (also the traditional Mercedes clock) which further amplifies the overall appeal of the cabin. Neat placement of buttons along with terrific fit and finish are the highlights of this cabin. The round AC vents are very S-Class like and so are the buttons and touchpad in the centre to operate the COMAND system. Even the buttons on the doors (specially the front where the electric adjustment for the seats is placed) have taken more than a leaf out of the S-Class design book

Yielding more space inside the C-Class is the removal of the gear lever, the baby rear-wheel drive Benz gets the gear selector lever on the right stalk like all other Mercs. There are quite a few storage places inside the cabin and the Stuttgart automaker has gone ahead and loaded this car with plenty of kit too. The C200 variant we tested had everything you would expect from a car of this price and that includes things like an 8.4-inch screen for the infotainment system which is loaded with a lot of features like 3D satellite navigation, phone connectivity (including apps), etc. You can also control vehicle settings including ambient lighting (3 colours – ice blue, white, amber), seat belt adjustment, door locking, locator illumination, etc. Other features include a rearview camera with guidelines, reverse parking sensors (the display is on the cluster as well), three zone climate control, front and rear panoramic roof, ARTICO leather upholstery, push button start/stop and a 13-speaker Burmester sound system that sounds excellent.

The front seats offer good support and have been designed to fit all kinds of people, you sit snug and the seat hugs you thereby ensuring no fatigue even on long drives. Both the front seats are electrically adjustable with memory function. The new C-Class is aimed at the rear passenger, as so evident by the sun blinds on the windows of the rear doors as well as an electrically operated one for the rear windshield. The rear AC vents have seven fan speeds and we love the way the buttons operate, you push up or down to toggle. The rear seat now offers much needed improvement in legroom which makes the C-Class a good chauffeur driven car, there is also good amount of headroom for tall passengers but under-thigh support is a bit lacking. The rear bench is best for two as the transmission tunnel intrudes massively at the rear, thereby preventing a third person from sitting comfortably. Cabin lights at the rear are placed at either ends as the panoramic roof prevents a centre cabin light from being placed. While boot space is decent, the placement of the space saver tyre in the boot (and not under it) hampers its usage.

Mercedes Benz C Class Performance

The new-gen C-Class is available in two engine options – a 2.0-litre petrol and a 2.2-litre diesel. The former produces a maximum power of 181bhp at 5, 500rpm and 300Nm at 1, 200rpm – 4, 000rpm, while the latter offers 167.62bhp at 3, 000rpm – 4, 200rpm and 400Nm at 1, 400rpm – 2, 800rpm. Transmitting power to the rear wheels is a 7-speed automatic transmission (7G-TRONIC Plus).

The petrol engine is refined, and offers strong mid-range performance. It claims to achieve 0-100kmph in 7.3 seconds. The aerodynamic body construction reduces wind resistance, and aids to its handling and high speed performance. The current generation of the sedan gets ‘Agility Select’ driving modes – Eco, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual – that alter engine, steering, gearbox and climate control. The new MRA platform makes the new C-Class 100kgs lighter and stiffer than the previous model. This also contributes to its fuel economy and drivability. The new electric steering is more responsive than the old hydraulic unit. With higher ground clearance, robust tyres and AIRMATIC suspension, the C-Class offers balanced and smooth ride quality on rough Indian terrains.

Braking capabilities of the sedan are superb. With adaptive braking system, the car stops instantly, even at high revs. It also gets advanced ABS (anti-lock braking system), EBD (electronic brake-force distribution), electronic stability program, dynamic cornering assist and skid control function.

The 2143 cc Diesel – powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 17 kmpl in city and 19 kmpl on highways, while the Petrol variant offers a mileage of 10 kmpl on urban roads and 14 kmpl and freeways, respectively.

Mercedes Benz C Class Driving

The C-Class isn’t designed as a sport machine, and it lacks the athletic feel of rival cars like the BMW 4 Series. Still, the C-Class is composed around corners with sharp steering. The top AMG models are more focused in their handling prowess, with sharper responses. For more info on Mercedes Benz C Class  visit Tec

The real pride of the C-Class is its soft ride, which remains smooth under virtually any condition. And if you want to have a smoother ride or sportier performance, then you can switch through the C-Class’ four drive modes – which adjust steering and throttle response – until you find one to your liking. There are also three available suspensions in sedan models, depending on which trim you choose – Sport, Comfort, and Airmatic, which is adaptive air suspension – with varying degrees of stiffness that affect ride quality. Coupe and convertible models are only available with Sport and Airmatic suspension.

Mercedes Benz C Class Safety

Standard safety features for the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C300 include antilock brakes, stability and traction control, front and rear side curtain airbags, a driver knee airbag, a drowsy driver monitor and frontal collision warning and mitigation. Other optional features include a surround-view camera system, a blind-spot monitor, adaptive headlights, automatic high beams, lane keeping assist, upgraded frontal collision mitigation, and rear-end collision warning with automatic braking.

Mercedes Benz C Class Verdict

The entry-level rear-wheel drive luxury car class is an important segment for the German trio. The C-Class was facing tough competition from the F30 BMW 3-Series which took the game forward by several notches. With the new C-Class, Mercedes hasn’t just replied but also re-written the rules of the segment. The fourth generation C-Class is not only better in most respects, it’s way more desirable too. While early adopters will have to do with the petrol only option, those looking for a diesel car in this segment should definitely wait as the new C-Class is as thoroughly impressive as a Merc should be.

Mercedes Benz GLA Class Overview & Test Drive

Mercedes Benz GLA Class Overview

Mercedes-Benz has always been one of the most popular car manufacturer’s in the world and in India along with being popular it has also been an extremely aspirational brand symbolising success and fame. Now all these popular brands have one or more “Heroes” in their line-up which are responsible for making the brand a popular one. Maruti had the 800/Alto, Honda has the City, Toyota has the Innova and so on. But as you go higher in the segments you find that it is not one particular model that leads the brand, rather its the legacy and heritage that ropes in the consumers.

seepennywork

As a result of which one will always find premium manufacturers taking you back to their roots and showing you how they have always achieved distinction through the years and how the current consumer is getting the best of what the brand has accumulated over the decades. Times though, are changing. With premium manufacturers now trying to percolate into the lower segments, it will require more than just legacy and heritage to rack up those numbers that the lower segments demand and that is where the ‘Hero’ of the brand comes into play. View offers on Mercedes Cars from Mercedes dealers in Hyderabad at Autozhop.

Mercedes-Benz announced its intention to make more affordable front-wheel drive cars a while back with their new MFA platform and the new A-Class and the B-class were the first to be spawned on the basis of the new platform however, it was the GLA-Class that had captured the most attention thanks to India being an SUV biased nation. After months of speculation about its arrival and in the midst of Mercedes’ model offensive, the compact SUV is finally here. We took it around some brilliant roads in the hilly regions of Shimla to find out if this car really has what it takes to be the ‘Hero’ of the brand.

Mercedes Benz GLA Class Design

The overall design remains the same and you’ll have to squint a little to notice the changes. The front end features a revised bumper and a new grille, which along with the muscular creases on the bonnet makes it look a little more aggressive. I personally like the grille and the big three-pointed star logo it proudly flaunts. It actually gels with the attractive canyon beige colour on our test car.The headlamps are brand new and feature a full-LED set-up, which Mercedes-Benz regards as a high-performance unit. It certainly delivers what it proclaims as illumination at night is indeed bright and has adequate focus and spread.

The side profile remains the same, but it’s not that it needed any touch-ups. The crease line that begins from the headlamps and runs along the length of the GLA to disappear into the rear wheel arch is what catches your eye. This angle also highlights the GLA’s hatchback roots, evident from the short pillars and small glass area. While it’s not a cause for concern, the shape and size of the windows does hamper your view from the cabin. So parking in tight areas or manoeuvring in heavy traffic requires a little more attention. For 2017, the GLA also gets new, 18-inch alloy wheels with a five-spoke design that looks quite appealing.

The rear bumper is tweaked slightly and gets a new faux skid plate along with a set of dazzling full-LED lamps. They look similar to the GLC’s tail lamps, and to my eye, a bit better than the ones on the previous GLA.On the whole, the GLA looks sporty and, as I’ve said before, just as what the crossover rule book states.

Mercedes Benz GLA Class Cabin

The interior, shared with the likes of the A-Class and B-Class is typically classy and sporty. The centrally mounted screen combined with the three large air-conditioning vents lends an aeronautic touch to the GLA’s interior. The AC-vents though have been slightly updated with more intrinsic styling elements embedded into them. The GLA also comes standard with a huge panoramic roof and sunroof package that gives the cabin an airy feel. One can opt for three interior color packages. The all-black version with a silver accent piece running from left to right, looks mature and goes well with the silver accent on the steering wheel. On the other hand, the all-beige and the black-beige combination interior options look classy and will surely appeal to the Indian customer.

The GLA-Class comes with electric seats for both the driver and the passenger. While one can choose a black interior package, the more popular beige version makes the car feel airier and larger on the inside. Although there is a decent amount of legroom in the back seats, we found a severe lack of under thigh support. This factor would make the passengers in the back of the GLA feel rather uncomfortable on longer road trips.

The Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class comes loaded with everything you might want from a luxury compact SUV in today’s day and age. The typically Mercedes-Benz centre console with the inbuilt telephone and audio controls does look a little outdated although they do their job well. With additional features like a reverse camera, parking sensors and GPS-navigation, the GLA is right at par with everything else in its segment. The GLA also comes with safety features like tyre pressure monitoring sensors, attention assist and seven airbags.

Mercedes-Benz’s Command system that controls all the function on the main infotainment screen is as good as ever and offers the driver and the passengers an intuitive experience. That said, we did find the infotainment screen to be slightly smaller than what we could have expected and as with the A-Class and B-Class, a slight after though on the part of the designers. Mercedes Benz GLA Class Gearbox

For the Indian market the GLA gets 2 engine options. The GLA 200 which is a 1991 cc turbo-petrol unit pushing out a good 181 PS and the GLA 200 CDI which gets a 2143 cc diesel unit which pumps out a smallish 134 PS. The surprising bit is that both the petrol and the diesel unit put down an identical 300 Nm of torque. We got in the petrol variant first. Its a refined motor and loves to be revved. Putting the car in manual mode and working the 7-speed dual clutch gearbox with those lovely paddles behind the wheel reaps greater rewards and the bonus is a delightful exhaust note from those twin pipes at the back. In regular Eco mode though, the gearbox can be a little slow to respond. Getting in the diesel immediately, you feel a slight buzz through the pedals immediately telling you about the oil burner in front.

With just 134 PS to play with the diesel is more for the average commuter than the enthusiast. Since the torque in the diesel is available much lower in the power-band, the diesel engine has slightly better drivabilty because of which it is easier to coast in higher gears however, when outright performance is called for the diesel motor feels a little lacking. The diesel does promise efficiency though and with the company claiming over 17 kmpl, it does promise to be the most fuel efficient SUV amongst its rivals. A roadtest will determine exact numbers soon. For the wealthy and the power hungry,Mercedes-Benz told us about the arrival of the GLA 45 AMG next month which with its powerful four-cylinder turbocharged engine will blow most sportscars out of the water.

Mercedes Benz GLA Class Driving

The GLA  is set up stiff, so the ride is a bit bumpy at slow speeds, especially when driving over potholes or undulations. Pick up the speeds, however, and the ride does get a bit better. But the joy of this set up lies in corners, and that’s where the GLA shines.Despite its 171mm ground clearance, the GLA handles just like a car. It remains flat and true to an intended line around a corner. There is good feedback from the steering too, and the grip from the fat tyres and the all-wheel-drive system make the GLA enjoyable around canyon roads. This, with the added peace of mind that you won’t have to worry too much about scraping the underbelly on bad roads.

Mercedes Benz GLA Class Safety

Mercedes Benz GLA Class has a strong safety system with the presence of adaptive brake lights flashing, attention assist, LED headlamps, hill start assist and many other features. Mercedes Benz GLA Class comes with Electronic Stability Program (ESP) as well that reduces the chances to over steer and over turn.

Mercedes Benz GLA Class Final Word

The Mercedes-Benz GLA is not only the most important car Mercedes-Benz will launch this year, we believe it will be the most important car Mercedes-Benz will launch for a while. With the new C-Class and the stunning CLA-Class on its way to India soon, the only thing Mercedes-Benz will really have to be worried about is the GLA cannibalising traditional sedan customers with the lure and aura of a multipurpose platform like a compact SUV.

Should the Audi Q3 and the BMW X1 be worried about the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class wooing audiences in a way they have never had to worry about in the past? Considering the fact that the GLA offers good performance, handing and interior trim while managing to look as good as it does, the answer is a resounding YES! And if that’s not all, Mercedes-Benz India have also announced that they will launch the GLA45 AMG very soon. If that wasn’t enough, it will followed by an all-wheel-drive version of the GLA with an even more powerful diesel engine.
